Amy Roloff - Boise | Coeur d'Alene
Business Women, Inspirational Speaker, TV Star, Philanthropist, Farm Owner, Author, and Mom
Amy realized her passion for people and helping others reach their potential as a kid growing up to who she is today. Her challenges, experiences as a little person and success as a graduate with a BSBA from Central Michigan University in Personnel and Hospitality, an early education teacher, manager of a soccer club, youth team soccer coach, a hit TV show Little People Big World and her charity foundation are some ways that has led her to naturally inspire and touch people lives. She has overcome challenges to make a difference and wants others to know they can make a difference too.
As a devoted wife and involved mom to her four children Jeremy, Zachary, Molly and Jacob, Amy’s faith, family and sense of value is what gives her focus and purpose in all that she does. As a working women and mom Amy is invested in balancing all aspects of her life including managing to navigate a hectic family life along side a very project orientated and successful husband and family farm. She may be best known for filming her TLC phenomenon hit reality show “Little People Big World” that tells the story of her and her family for over 6 seasons of filming, 230 episodes averaging over 2.5 million viewers worldwide each year. Amy’s life has been forever changed into a media sensation. Her newfound celebrity and voice have inspired her to enact positive change in the world for kids and families globally. Amy’s life experiences and story of overcoming challenges has led to appearances on Oprah, Good Morning America, Rachel Ray Show, The View, Jay Leno and others. She has been interviewed by the New York Times, People Magazine, McCall’s, and numerous other media outlets.
What is most inspiring about Amy is that she has not let her own personal challenge of having achondroplasia dwarfism, a childhood illness, or constantly looked upon as not having possibilities stop her from taking action and keep moving forward. She has shown strength in believing in herself that she can make a difference and have success regardless of how others saw her. Amy may only be 4’ 2” but she never considered herself as having a disability. Amy has often said ‘I may be different but I can do what anyone else can do just in a different way.” Amy believes that everyone has value and purpose and can make an impact not only in their own life but others as well. Barb Bradley - Coeur d'Alene
I have been a Coeur d’Alene resident since 1977, relocating from Spokane, where both my husband and I were born. Many years ago we were fortunate to find a piece of land on the Spokane River where we built our dream home. We have lived there for 23 years and still treasure the beautiful views and wildlife that we experience daily. My husband and I own a local CPA firm, R. R. Bradley and Associates, PA, CPA located on NW Blvd, where I have worked as an accountant since our relocation.
Organizations I have volunteered with include:
The North Idaho Building Contractors Association where I am currently a Life Director after volunteering for most committee and Board positions; I currently serve as the Chair for the membership committee and on a sub committee for governmental affairs. I was presented with the Associate Member of the Year Award in 1989, 1990 and 2011. Our firm was presented with the Company of the Year Award in 2011.
I spent 6 years with the North Idaho Violence Prevention Center, where I served as Treasurer as well as participating and chairing many fund raising event committees; I continue to serve on the fund raising committee.
I recently completed my second 6 year term on the Board of the CdA Community Theatre and Academy, Inc.; I served as Treasurer for this most recent term on the Board and also served in the early 1990’s for a 6 year term where I went through the chairs to Presidency.
I have been a member of Soroptimist International of Coeur d’Alene since 1997, serving in all positions on the Board and chairing most committees.
I served on the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce Board for 6 years beginning as Treasurer and serving as Chairman of the Board in 2007-2008. I was a member of the Chamber Commodores for 8 years prior to joining the chamber Board. I was awarded the Ed Abbott Volunteer of the Year Award in 2002 and The Citizen of the Year Award in 2010; I currently serve on the finance and centennial committees.
I am serving on the On Site for Seniors fund raising committee for the second year.
I recently joined the Coeur d’Alene Homes Board of Directors and serve on the Building committee and an ad hoc community development committee.
I have also been involved on committees with St Pius Church, The Spokane River Association, the Kootenai County Substance Abuse Council, Spokane Assn of Women in Construction, The League of Women Voters as a registrar and 4 years as Treasurer on the Board of Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre.
I believe we should give back to the community in which we make our living, but most of all, I enjoy learning about the different organizations I volunteer with, meeting the wonderful staff and volunteers and stepping out of my “work box” to use my creative side in different ways.

Shirley Helpenstell - Boise
Shirley Helpenstell (known as Sus to everyone in Nampa) is a legend in that city.
She was born on a farm in Iowa with no plumbing or electricity. Today she lives in Nampa and has a Roomba robot vacuum and an electric wine opener! Now that is progress.
She attended Grinnell College where she met her husband, Fred Helpenstell. During the next 16 years she finished college, they got married and Fred entered medical school. He joined the army and became an orthopedic surgeon. Together they had four children and moved to Idaho where they have resided ever since.
Sus started teaching Junior High and has been teaching for over 50 years – from kindergarten to elementary to junior high and high school and even after school programs. She has taught mostly at St. Paul’s Catholic School in Nampa.
But she is so much more than a teacher. She is an inspiration and key community leader in her city.
She has served on the Nampa Schools Foundation, the Mercy Community Sale, Healthy Nampa Healthy Youth and the Northwest Nazarene University President’s Council.
She even strayed from Nampa a couple of times to serve on the boards for the Idaho Shakespeare Festival and the Idaho Community Foundation. She enjoyed her work with people from other parts of the state.
Sus has another deep love – the Nampa Boys & Girls Club.
She helped in the planning, founding, implementation and kickoff of getting the Boys & Girls Club started in Nampa.
In every organization there is someone who is the “sparkplug” behind the scenes to keep things going when others get discouraged or tired. That is Sus.
She has been on the Board of Directors from day one, starting in 1998 and was the Chairperson of the Board for 2 years.
She has been the Chairman of the live auction for 5 years.
At least 4 days a week she stops by the club to say “HI” to the kids and staff. (by the way, the staff and kids know her and love her – she even brings cookies on occasion)
The Nampa Boys & Girls Club is what it is today because of her dedication and passion!
Sus is always smiling, always has a positive attitude and loves to be involved in anything that supports youth.
Everyone in the city of Nampa loves Sus Helpenstell. She is one of the sweetest, most generous people in the town and has a “never slow down attitude.”
She is very modest and humble and does not like recognition – and to be honest – we had a hard time coming up with the information about her because she is not very “forthcoming” about herself.
She kept saying, “I don’t deserve this award, I haven’t done anything, I’m sure there are better candidates out there.”
But that is what makes Sus Helpenstell such a wonderful hero!
She doesn’t care who gets the credit. Someone has said, “Good things can be accomplished if you don’t care who gets the credit.”
Well, that is Sus Helpenstell. And wherever she serves other people – good things happen!
A couple of funny points about Sus –
• A friend of hers told us that when he first moved here and went to her home for an event he took flowers. Well, Sus does not necessarily like flowers because they are a “waste of money.”
• Fred and Sus did something nice for the Boys & Girls Club so the director mailed a “thank you” letter. She loved the letter but felt it was a waste of the .39 cents postage – “it could be spent on something else.”
Sus Helpenstell is the type of person every community needs!
People like her are what makes Idaho a great place to live!
